Onboarding matters, and for Hireframe, it matters a lot because we onboard new-hires at Hireframe and then those new-hires get a second onboarding at the companies at which they are placed. We do a lot of onboarding! 

One unexpected piece of feedback we received from new Hireframers and their managers (our customers) is that onboarding can be awkward at times. Meeting people for the first time in virtual 1:1s (i.e. Zoom, Google Meet) can feel awkward. 

So how do we make these initial 1:1s less awkward?

One way is to share a little bit about yourself prior to the meeting. And you can do this using an About Me slide like this one.

Think of it as if LinkedIn and Instagram had a baby - some professional and some personal - to get the conversation started.

The About Me slide helps speed up the “getting to know you” phase, and gets you to the “let’s conquer the world together” phase sooner. And it helps make onboarding more enjoyable and less awkward! 

If you would like to make your own About Me slide, here are some questions to contemplate.

Professional

  • What do you love about your company and role?
  • When are you at your best professionally, or at work?
  • What do you value most in the workplace? 
  • What are you working on (e.g. personal development, projects, initiatives)?
  • What should new team members know to work most effectively with you?

Personal

  • How do you spend your time outside of work?
  • Who do you spend that time with?
  • What are your favorites? (e.g. quotes, books, movies)
  • What are you working on outside of work?
  • What pictures or symbols represent you?
